The business – which has been open locally since 1968 – has served both Guernsey and Jersey’s construction, landscaping and events sectors with a range of equipment and services for more than 50 years.

In Guernsey, the company operated out of the Pitronnerie Road Industrial Estate. While 25 people have lost their jobs due to the closure, it has not been confirmed how many of these are in Guernsey.

SGB Hire Channel Islands was closed after a decision by the company’s UK owner, Brand Safway.

‘This was not an easy decision and was reached only after careful consideration and consultation with relevant stakeholders,’ it said in a statement.

‘Our immediate priority is to support our employees in this situation by providing appropriate assistance.’

Jersey’s Construction Council would not comment on why the company ceased trading but praised SGB as a long-standing provider to the construction and domestic markets, delivering hire services and associated support across the islands.

SGB Hire stocked a range of tools, builders plant, gardening products, event and catering supplies, site services, equipment and workwear for hire and sale to trade and domestic customers.

The company sponsored the portable toilets at last year’s major Liberation Day events.
