Grow’s Green Mile fundraising initiative launches on Friday 1 May in collaboration with the Nature Commission and it encourages individuals, families, businesses and local groups to walk at least one mile every day throughout the month.

‘This fundraising is so important for us. Our operating costs are about £800,000 a year and one third of that has to come from fundraising, donations and events,’ said Grow general manager Mandy Mackelworth.

‘We support 52 crew and try and give them the skills they need to go into employment. Two crew members have gone into employment this year, one is in a receptionist post and one is at the recycling yard.’

The Grow crew members will be getting involved in the walks during May, and said they were excited to get started with the challenge.

With more than 30 organised or planned walks to choose from, there is something for everyone.

From the south coast cliff paths and the green lanes of St Martin to rarely-visited corners of L’Ancresse Common, participants can explore some of Guernsey’s loveliest places at their own pace. Accessible walks will be clearly highlighted. People involved in the challenge can also choose their own routes every day. Some walks will be guided walks led by the Nature Commission.

‘We will hopefully be able to help people identify some of what they will see on the walks,’ said Nature Commission CEO Jessi Jennings.

‘We are organising a bat walk and we are joining up with the bat section of La Societe for that as well as some circular walks.

‘We have two in mind that are hopefully accessible, but there will be at least one accessible walk.’

The month begins with a walk from Grow followed by a celebratory BBQ, and ends on Sunday 31 May with a final walk and summer craft market.

Entry into the Grow Green Mile is £15 for adults and £5 for children. Families of five can enter for £30 and a corporate team of 10 can enter for £150.
