Prison-made toy boxes installed at four popular beaches

The inmates at Guernsey Prison have hand-crafted four beach toy boxes, which have been installed at Cobo, Grandes Rocques, Petit Bot, and Pembroke, ready to be filled with donated beach toys, buckets, and spades.

The boxes were sponsored by Mim’s World, and have been installed at four of the island’s most popular beaches.

The endeavour was run by Creative Learning in Prison – a charity dedicated to providing access to education, employment and other productive activities to the island’s prisoners – which delivered the boxes in conjunction with Mim’s World.

‘As with all CLIP projects, this is about prisoners being able to feel like they are giving something back to the local community,’ said David Le Feuvre, head of education, training and regimes at the prison. ‘Those who have worked on this project have not only been able to gain new skills in carpentry & woodworking, but for several who also have children of their own it has been a labour of love to ensure that they are not only well-built but also have some personal touches added.’

CLIP has been running since 2013, and has been responsible for a wide variety of productive activities run at the prison, such as the construction of a Liberation Day cavalcade float and growing vegetables on an allotment.

‘CLIP aims to inspire prisoners to fully integrate into the community by providing them with a range of education and learning opportunities that contribute towards a healthy and purposeful prison,’ said Mr Le Feuvre.

‘In turn this contributes towards the vision and mission of the Prison Service which is “to ensure public protection and commit to reduce reoffending, by providing a safe and secure environment that enables prisoners to address the causes of offending behaviour and provide them with values, skills and experience to take a positive role in the community upon release”.’

The boxes were sponsored by Mim’s World, and have been installed at four of the island’s most popular beaches so that beachgoers will have free access to a variety of second-hand toys – a more affordable and sustainable option for families during the summertime.
