The business, Zeng’s, is already successful in Shanghai, after a decade of offering cakes, pastries, gelatos and other desserts, blending traditional French pastries with Chinese-inspired flavours and seasonal local ingredients.
Cordon Bleu-trained chef Zeng YuHua has more than a decade of experience in the culinary industry, and is planning to relocate to Guernsey and intending to buy the site of the former bar.
‘My passion for creating high-quality, handcrafted cakes, pastries, and gelatos has allowed me to establish a loyal following in China, where we’ve consistently delivered an exceptional blend of traditional French techniques and innovative Asian flavours,’ she said in the application, made from a local address.
‘Having spent years perfecting our offerings in one of the world’s most dynamic food markets, I am now eager to bring this experience and expertise to Guernsey.
‘The island presents a unique opportunity to introduce a range of products that are not widely available here, from delicate French pastries to rich, Asian-inspired desserts.
‘I believe that Guernsey’s residents and visitors alike will appreciate the opportunity to experience a fresh culinary perspective, crafted with the same passion and dedication that has fuelled our success in Shanghai.’
The former West End Bar is currently zoned for retail use, and the application has been submitted to change it to a cafe and bakery.
Zeng’s said it would initially mirror its online-only business model in Shanghai, before, in 6-12 months, the bakery and cafe would be opened in Guernsey.
‘We understand that the location and building are of historical importance to Guernsey and we intend the business to fit into the environment in a tasteful manner, contributing economic and cultural worth to the immediate and surrounding areas,’ said Ms YuHua.
Many will remember the West End Bar, a distinctly locals pub run by the Guernsey Brewery, which closed in the early 2000s.
