Following a milestone celebration last year which was centred in St Peter Port, head of Culture and Heritage services Helen Glencross MBE said she was pleased to see so many people this year too.
‘I’m absolutely delighted, just look at the turnout,’ she said.
‘You never know what to expect after such a significant milestone anniversary last year but it has been great.
‘This morning we had the parade in the sunshine and what is really nice about that is the public turnout, seeing how many people still come and see the inspection of the parade. For me personally a highlight is doing the siren, that is always a highlight.’
Mrs Glencross said that the parade is still an important part of celebrations.
‘It’s a way of commemorating, Liberation Day is about celebrating, but also commemorating,’ she said.
Deputy Andy Cameron, vice-president and Liberation Day lead for the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture, said that it was important to keep it a day of remembrance with a transition into making Liberation Day ‘our national day’.
He said that he had enjoyed seeing some of the Liberation 7 road race, as well as some of the action on the piers.
‘I think seeing the fair in operation is definitely a highlight, but the Liberation Day 7 and the parade was special,’ he said.
‘I was chatting to some of the runners and I think they would have liked the weather to be a bit cooler though, but thankfully the rain has held off, and will stay ok for the fireworks.’
