After 11 years, Mr Barker said that leading his final Liberation Day service was emotional.
‘It’s a huge privilege, as always, to be able to lead the service and especially this year to preach,’ he said.
‘It’s emotional really, it’s been a fascinating 11 years, and it’s been a huge privilege to serve here.’
During his sermon Mr Barker spoke of how he came to appreciate the island’s history and why it was so important to continue celebrating Liberation Day.
‘It did not take long after moving to Guernsey to begin to appreciate the remarkable history and culture of the islands of this Bailiwick,’ he said.
‘Guernsey has so much to say to the wider world about this island’s experience of occupation and how relationships have developed with the people of Biberach over the last 30 or so years.
‘One of the most moving experiences of my time in Guernsey was a visit to Biberach in October 2024 during which I had the privilege of briefly speaking in the united service for the Catholic and Protestant communities in Biberach who have shared the parish church of St Martin since 1548.’
