The daughter of renowned island cricketer Warren Barrett and sister-in law to Kate Barrett, creator of the Guernsey tartan, Mrs Reid found her Guernsey roots ran too deep to disappear when she left the island decades ago.
‘I was born and brought up in Guernsey – it’s always been my home,’ she said.
‘It’s my heritage, and every year when Liberation Day comes round, I think about it.’
The friends who celebrated the day alongside Mrs Reid, all decked out in red, white and blue, had also all visited the island at some point, and, though perhaps not native islanders, were all more than happy to eat Mrs Reid’s bean jar and say boo to the Germans.
‘We made Guernsey bean jar – which was amazing – and we also made gache melee and Guernsey gache. I have a Guernsey cookbook so I used that,’ said Mrs Reid.
‘They all had so much fun, they said they want to do it again next year. We were lucky that it came on a weekend, and next year will be on a Sunday so we might do something similar again.’
