Firefighters Matt France, Craig Mollet and Russell Lambourne have signed up to complete the 27th annual fundraising walk on Saturday. The weather forecast is far from last week's record temperatures, but this team would be well trained to handle the heat.
To intensify the challenge, they will be kitted out in full firefighting attire, sharing one breathing apparatus set between them. The set will be relayed for carrying duty at different stages of the gruelling 39-mile coastal route.
‘It definitely seemed like a good idea when we first discussed it,’ said Mr France.
‘But that opinion may change over the course of the walk. Training has already shown us what a challenge it is going to be.’
In preparation, the teammates have been performing stair training sessions during their lunch breaks at the Fire & Rescue service station tower.
All money donated to the roaming firefighters will go towards this year’s Saffery Rotary Walk chosen charities and local causes.
‘The support and reactions we’ve had so far have been brilliant,’ said Mr France.
‘We wanted to do something different while supporting such an important community event and the local charities involved.’
The Saffery Rotary Walk starts at the crack of dawn on Saturday.
