Traffic and Highway Services identified the vehicles as being abandoned in early May, when a notice was placed on the cars explaining they would be collected for disposal.
Letters were also sent to the registered owners to offer an opportunity for them to say if they were not abandoned. Ozzy Ozanne Recoveries collected the vehicles last Friday and they were scrapped by Guernsey Recycling Group, both free of charge.
Environment & Infrastructure committee member Andy Cameron said that abandoned vehicles are not only an eyesore, but can become a source of pollution.
‘I am keen to ensure that genuinely abandoned vehicles are identified and removed, while also making sure that we follow the correct process and do not take action against vehicles that are still in legitimate use,’ he said.
‘I would like to thank Ozzy, Faye and their teams for generously providing their services free of charge. Their support has enabled these vehicles to be removed at no cost to the taxpayer and is a great example of local businesses working with the community for the benefit of the island.’
It is expected that a small number of other genuinely abandoned vehicles will be removed in the near future.
