Record for June falls again as hot weather builds

Guernsey’s temperature record for June fell for the second consecutive day yesterday with 33.8C recorded at the airport.

Lots of people took the opportunity to cool off in the sea yesterday as the hot weather continued, with a high of 33.8C recorded at the airport.

That reading surpassed Monday’s high of 32.2C, which was already some way clear of the previous hottest recorded temperature for the month of 30.8C taken in 1976.

Once again, many islanders looked to cool off in the sea with the slipway at Havelet particularly busy at lunchtime as the heat built towards the high just after 4pm.

The forecast provided by Jersey Met had indicated a potential maximum of 35C for Tuesday and it is expecting the heatwave to continue through to Thursday, with 34C forecast for tomorrow and 35C again the day after.

The hottest temperature seen in the island since records began remains the 34.3C seen in August 2003, but that could still be under threat this week as the hot weather gripping large swathes of Europe continues.
