Vauvert Year 4s hit the beach

YEAR 4 children from Vauvert Primary School flocked to Pembroke Bay for a series of beach activities yesterday – the conclusion of a sea safety programme that they have been learning for some time.

The session was run by the Guernsey Sports Commission and held as part of the States’ cultural enrichment programme, which sees students of all ages in States primary schools gain free access to out-of-classroom experiences during the school day.

‘This is about ensuring that the children learn how to be safe in the water,’ said Guernsey Sports Commission director of communications Nicky Will.

‘We’ve done a lot of fun activities on the beach this morning, and in the water we’ve made an “adventure zone” with a lot of fun swim activities, and for the children who are less confident we’ve made a “splash zone”.’

The Sports Commission was also responsible for delivering the sea safety instruction that the children received in class sessions, which included learning about wind direction and how it affects tides, hazards in the water, and how to manage a situation where you become stranded on the rocks.

‘We live on an island, so it’s vital for everyone to know how to stay safe on the beach,’ said Year 4 teacher Vicky Collenette.

‘I know just from my experience that some of the children might not go to the beach very often, which makes events like this even more important.’
