The five people involved in the incident which happened just after 5pm sustained various injuries, none of which were said to be life-threatening. One of the vehicles had a UK registration.
Four double-crewed ambulances and an operational commander from Ambulance and Rescue were deployed to the incident, alongside police officers and firefighters.
Given the number of potential casualties and the need for multiple ambulance resources, staff from St John Ambulance’s non-emergency patient transfer service were also sent to the scene to assist with driving ambulance vehicles, while off-duty staff and night shift crews were called in early to assist and to maintain emergency cover for the rest of the island. Volunteer community first responders were also activated, supporting an initial response to an unrelated medical case elsewhere in the island.
‘Incidents requiring multiple ambulance resources are relatively rare, however when they do happen, or when demand increases, we have plans in place to ensure the appropriate responses are activated,’ said Aimee Lihou, chief operating officer at the Ambulance and Rescue Service.
‘Our operational commanders are trained to assess and prioritise resources at the scene accordingly, likewise 999 calls are triaged by the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre to ensure an appropriate and timely response for medical cases elsewhere in the island.’
The road remained closed for much of the evening, with Guernsey Civil Protection volunteers also in attendance to support with traffic management.
