Island’s final mail plane takes off tonight

Guernsey held on to it longer than Jersey and the Isle of Man, but the island’s last mail plane takes off tonight, as Guernsey Post embraces a new era of ‘more cost-effective and resilient’ sea transport.

From Monday all outgoing mail to the UK will be transported by sea. Guernsey Post chief executive Steve Sheridan said customers would not notice any real change.

‘All incoming mail already arrives reliably by sea,’ he said.

‘Moving outbound mail to the same model means customers will see minimal difference, while helping ensure a financially sustainable service for the future.

‘It also allows us to introduce better-value options, including our new Tracked service, which offers a lower price than standard mail on some weight steps, along with the reassurance of tracking.’

Saying goodbye to the mail plane means that delivery times will take about 24 hours longer.

‘For customers with time-critical items, we’re introducing a next-day by air option, ensuring urgent deliveries remain supported whilst we test this service,’ Mr Sheridan said.
