The £155,000 project will see the painted footpath on the west side of the road, which runs from Mont D’Aval to Les Eturs, replaced with a physical footpath about 150cm wide.
The lack of a pavement in the road has long been a concern for safety campaigners given its use by young people going to and from school. As a relatively wide road, it can also attract speeding traffic.
For some years there has been a painted pavement on the western side of the road.
‘It’s fantastic that they’re doing this. Now people are going to feel a lot safer going down that road,’ said Deputy Ross Le Brun.
It is hoped that in addition to making the road safer for students, the pavement will also encourage more to consider making the journey into school either on foot or by bike.
‘Physical footpaths offer greater protection for pedestrians, and align with the vision and aims of the Integrated Transport Strategy to provide safe, healthy and efficient travel options. Improving safe and connected infrastructure around schools for the benefit of students who walk or cycle is a key area of focus,’ said Laura Oxburgh, head of on-island travel and transport implementation.
She anticipated that the pavement would be positively received by the community.
The footpath is being built in tandem with the resurfacing works currently taking place in the road.
Both are planned to be finished by the end of the summer holidays.
