The upgraded sites at Centenary House and the Tennis Centre are the first to be brought into service as part of the next stage of the roll-out. Customers in the areas served by these sites will begin to see 5G on compatible devices as testing and optimisation continues.

This milestone follows significant work to upgrade mobile sites and core network systems, giving Sure’s teams the opportunity to test and optimise the new 5G network in live conditions before more sites are brought into service.

‘This is a meaningful moment in our mobile network transformation,’ said Sure Group CEO Alistair Beak.

‘Seeing the first upgraded sites connected in Guernsey shows that the work our teams have been delivering across the business is starting to become visible for customers.

‘The scale of this investment goes beyond mobile sites alone. We are upgrading the infrastructure and systems that keep our islands connected, improving the mobile experience customers rely on today while building a network ready for future technologies. We recognise that some customers have experienced disruption while this work has been taking place, and we do not take that lightly. Our teams are working carefully through each stage of the roll-out so we can deliver the better mobile experience this investment is designed to support.’

Over the coming weeks, engineers will continue phased mobile site upgrades across the island. And as more sites go live, customers will experience more of what Sure’s new 5G network can deliver, from clearer calls and improved coverage to smoother browsing and a better everyday mobile experience.

As this work continues, some customers may notice temporary disruption to mobile service in some areas during planned work windows. This could affect calls, texts or mobile data. Emergency calls will continue to work. Landlines, broadband and wifi will not be affected.

The company has committed to investing nearly £50m. to build what it said was the most advanced mobile network in the Channel Islands and would be set to deliver 100% 5G standalone coverage nearly a decade ahead of UK operators.

Working with strategic partner Ericsson, Sure is completely replacing its existing network and by combining Sure and Airtel infrastructure, it said that coverage and capacity would increase by up to 30%.
