Referred to as Attainment 8, the rating evaluates students’ performance across a variety of topics, including English and maths, and is used by Education, Sport & Culture to ensure that Bailiwick schools are comparable with neighbouring jurisdictions – although 30% of learners in the island are educated at the grant-aided colleges, compared to 7% in England.
Under Attainment 8, 44.9% of all students in the Bailiwick were successful compared to 44.7% last year, while at the States-maintained schools the total success rate was 37.4%, down on last year’s 38.2%.
When looking only at passes in English, 69.6% of Bailiwick students earned a Grade 4 or above while 65.1% achieved that in maths.
In the UK the figures were 59.5% and 57.2% respectively.
Secondary School Partnership executive principal Elizabeth Coffey said she was pleased to see another positive set of results, particularly in English.
She thanked the principals of all the schools and the staff teams for their continued commitment to the students and for their support and encouragement throughout their time at the school.
‘I also want to recognise the families and others who have supported young people along the way,’ she said.
‘Most of all, congratulations to every student receiving their results today, and I wish them every success in whatever comes next.’
Today was, for many students, the day they received the first important set of early qualifications they had ever worked towards, said ESC president Paul Montague.
‘Behind the results in each envelope are years of effort, challenges to overcome, and a great deal of growing and evolving.
‘Whatever today’s results look like, that journey deserves recognition.’
He thanked all of those who had helped the young people arrive in this moment.
‘To the young people – well done, be proud and good luck for the future.’
Director of Education Nick Hynes said that a qualification achieved at this stage can be a turning point and unlock the next step for the student, be it sixth form, college, training or starting work.
‘Every young person collecting results today has shown the resilience and commitment it takes to reach that point, and we are incredibly proud of them,’ he said.
There was strong achievement by students at Le Murier and Les Voies schools, with six leavers at Les Voies gaining 33 qualifications across GCSE and BTEC subjects and all of the students earning at least one.
Students at Le Murier progressed through accredited courses delivered by recognised awarding bodies that ensured their learning was externally validated and aligned with national standards, said ESC.
In addition to these achievements, the students have undertaken work experience, Job Quest, Duke of Edinburgh, transition activities and targeted learning programmes.
