Although the business has evolved, locally-roasted coffee remains central to a company that now provides complete workplace and hospitality solutions, including coffee, water and vending machines, servicing, sundry supplies and ongoing customer support.
‘It all started because I wanted to roast coffee, which was my hobby,’ said founder Chris Bader.
‘I was supplying a couple of people and it gradually became too much for a hobby. It was one thing or the other, so I decided it was time to give it a go.’
Mr Bader believes its complete-service approach is what sets the business apart.
‘We are responsible for the coffee, the machine and its maintenance. If there is a problem, it is our problem,’ he said.
‘We cannot blame the coffee supplier because we roast it ourselves. That accountability is one of our strengths. Coffee is where we started, but today we provide customers with a complete solution.’
As the company’s services have expanded, the way its growing team works has also changed.
‘Roasting equipment, automation and technology have developed enormously, but the craft of roasting remains at the forefront. It begins with selecting green coffee and understanding how different roasting methods create different flavours,’ said Mr Bader.
Bean14 has also become an accredited Speciality Coffee Association training centre, enabling it to deliver internationally recognised coffee courses locally in Guernsey.
‘We can help our customers and other local businesses improve the quality and consistency of their coffee, while giving people access to professional training without having to travel off-island,’ said Mr Bader.
