The mill is on sale for a guide price of £2.95m. and it is the first exceptional property of historic significance to be allowed to be sold on the open market.
Owners Vale Mill Ltd have already been given permission to turn the property into a six-floor, four-bedroom home with an observation deck and an underground extension leading to cantilever space around the adjoining quarry.
They are now asking for the go-ahead to install a floating walkway from the mill to the face of the quarry and to erect two floating pontoon water lodges with a terrace at the first-floor level to the left of the floating quarry walkway. This application replaces one which was approved to include a pavilion within the quarry and a two-storey glazed entrance to the mill.
‘The current application replaces the pavilion element with a more comprehensive residential arrangement within the quarry face,’ said the company in its cover letter.
The proposed pavilion would connect to the base of the mill with a tunnel under the driveway, and an external rotunda containing a spiral staircase.
There would be a floating pontoon at water level with floating pods containing a summer house and sauna.
In addition the scheme includes parking for two vehicles, bin storage, a kitchen garden and associated landscape works.
But this will be only for the private residential use of the Vale Mill, the owners stressed. ‘They would not create separate residential planning units.’
