Heroes of hospitality

Yesterday’s front page story about a new deal to purchase the Duke of Richmond Hotel said a fair bit, but left a fair bit unsaid.

It said that, despite all the doom and gloom that’s peddled around about the state of our tourism and transport links, there are people in Guernsey who are still quite prepared to invest in our longest-standing industry, on one of our more substantial establishments too, which very much still has a beating heart.

Maybe, as Charlie Walker from the Little Big Group said, you need to be ‘bold, brave and maybe a little bit stupid’ to do so.

‘I think Guernsey’s at this turning point of something really special,’ she added.

So what might that be? We see investment – big investment – in other establishments.

We see some positivity about working with Brittany Ferries and the potential for the French market too.

It must also say something about the ability to find staff nowadays, as well as the confidence and belief that we keep seeing across the tourism industry.

Those involved really are – and have to be – a resilient bunch.
