Watson to begin her French Open qualifying campaign
NOT for the first time this year, Heather Watson will have to defeat familiar face Irina Falconi if she is to reach the main draw of a Grand Slam.
Watson, buoyed by her ITF win in Prague and subsequent rise up the world rankings, starts off her French Open qualifying campaign at Roland Garros today against the 24-year-old American.
Falconi has dropped down to number 162 in the world, whereas Watson has risen back up to 92, but the pair have already fought out a tight battle in 2014.
At the start of the year, they met in the final round of qualifying at the Australian Open, with British number two Watson edging through 6-4, 7-6.
The 22-year-old Sarnian will hope for the same outcome in a qualifying tournament in which she is second seed and expected to be one of the eight to reach the main draw.
Watson's clash against Falconi, who actually reached the second round of the main draw at the Australian Open as a 'lucky loser', is scheduled to be on fourth on Court 14 today.
