St Jacques 64, Andover Seconds 3

ST JACQUES are off and running in their first season on the RFU league ladder.

On a historic afternoon at the KGV on Saturday, the home side delighted the large crowd who lined the grass bank and the clubhouse balcony by running in 10 tries, five in each half, to register a comprehensive victory on their Hampshire Solent Merit League debut.

There will be much sterner tests to come, though, as on this occasion Andover were able to travel with only 14 players and by midway through the first period they were down to 13 through injury, making Saints' task on the day that much easier.

Head coach Jon Bell will no doubt use those facts to keep some perspective within his squad and their feet firmly on the ground.

He certainly was not getting too carried away by the scoreline at full-time, although he deservedly wore the smile of a man who had been planning for this day for many months.

'Very relieved to get the first game out of the way – I can sleep now,' was his immediate reaction.
