The second seed came through 11-6, 11-6, 11-9 in 50 minutes in Philadelphia, but he was matched by 27-year-old Simpson for much of the encounter.
'That seems to be the way it is lately when I play Chris,' said the Commonwealth gold medallist.
'I'm hanging on at the end of the third trying not to let it go to a fourth. He's getting closer.'
