‘Ecstatic’ Gregg breaks 125s hill climb record

AJ Gregg has completed a rapid rise from newcomer to record-breaker at Le Val des Terres.

The 18-year-old, who only began competing at the start of last season, powered his 125cc KTM SX over the line in 35.99sec. to set a new class record at the Guernsey Motorcycle and Car Club’s bank holiday Monday hill climb.

Although he had lots of faith in his bike following a record at Alderney’s Fort Corblets last year, the flying youngster had little expectation of beating Josh Lambourne’s Motorcycles up to 125 class record of 36.01.

‘It’s awesome – it feels great,’ he said. ‘When I got to the top and I saw the time, I thought “I’ve just done the record already”.

‘It’s my second hill climb of my second season. I was pretty ecstatic at the top of the hill.’

His 37.59 first timed run was already significantly faster than his best time from the season-opening Easter event on a cold road, and he continued to make hay in pleasant conditions to break the record another two efforts later.

He now sets his sights on beating Harry Mann’s mark of 35.56 in the GK&MC record books.

Veteran Colin de Jersey went fastest overall on two wheels with a swift 33.85 on his sixth and final run, just 0.12sec. outside his outright personal best, but even he has been blown away by Gregg’s progression.

‘I’ve been riding for 46 seasons now and I can’t think of anyone else who has been that quick so soon,’ de Jersey said.

Jamie Bacon was the next-quickest motorcyclist, with a 34.30, with very little to split Leigh Digard, Reece Hicks and Pinchemain in the 34.60s.

There are no prizes for guessing who set the overall fastest tie of the day.

Nick Saunders had a short outing with only three runs but graduated with a FTD of 28.60 in his 1.6-litre race car, achieved on his last effort.

Steve Brehaut cracked the 30sec. mark on four occasions, peaking with a 29.59, while Luke Saunders came just outside with a 30.20 and likewise Ian Le Messurier in 30.22.

Jackie Le Cheminant also featured prominently and her 31.62 earned her both women’s honours and the fastest time by a vehicle under 1,000cc on the day.

Other highlights included a Le Page showdown at the front of a 12-strong Modified Limited Production Cars 1,401 to 2,000 class, where Adam posted 34.24 to pip Jamie by 0.05sec.

In the new class for superkarts, young Riley Carre posted a 33.57 in his powerful purple machine, which meant a significant improvement on his time to beat – 34.60 – from the season opener.

A consistent Andy Carre drove his 2.5-litre Subaru Impreza to a best of 37.75 in the new Sport Libre Saloons Rally Cars 4WD unlimited class.

During a generally improved event from the season opener, Jamie Queripel was unfortunate to turn his car over coming onto the top straight, after which he recovered well but ended his day early.
