Griffins beat the champions on opening night
GRIFFINS sent out a huge statement of intent in the opening game of the Odey Wealth Evening League Premier season by blowing away Cobo last night.
Many see this as the year that Griffins will claim their first top-flight title and despite missing the quartet of Jason Martin, Jordon Martel, Will Peatfield and Dan Le Messurier, they saw off the reigning champions in some style at the KGV – winning by a big 61-run margin.
After Griffins posted 132 from their 20 overs it looked as though a tight chase was on the cards, but the Cobo top order was skittled and they were eventually bowled out for 71.
In the other top-flight clash, St Pierre Rovers also began with a big win at Port Soif, as they defeated Optimists by 40 runs.
Their top four of GH Smit, Ben Fitchet, Glenn Le Tissier and Lee Savident set them on their way and Dale Webb's 30 not out from 15 balls set a daunting target of 178.
Optis always struggled to get near that and despite finishing only four wickets down, were well beaten.
