And those vying for selection for those Island Games have been warned by Guernsey Athletics that it is wise they reach the criteria sooner rather than later.

The 2019 Games take place in mid-July but after their experiences of the qualification process for Gotland earlier this year, Tom Druce said that it was important criteria were put in place this time around.

‘For Gotland, for reasons beyond our control we had to make a late deviation from our planned May selection,’ explained Guernsey Athletics development officer Druce.

‘So in case this cannot be remedied with the help of Giga [Guernsey Island Games Association], for 2019 we are giving the athletes as much notice as possible of the standards and criteria.

‘The athletes must be aware that there is a possibility they may have to set their qualifying performances this coming year.

‘It is not the situation I want as development officer – in an ideal world we wouldn’t be asking athletes to qualify a year out. But we and the athletes need to work within the parameters given.'
