Watson falls at first hurdle at Wimbledon

HEATHER WATSON’S miserable run of form continued last night as she crashed out of the ladies’ singles at Wimbledon in the first round.

The 26-year old Sarnian was the model of inconsistency on Court 14 of the All England Club against Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, some wonderful flashes of play and crowd-pleasing ground strokes being undone by spells where her concentration seemed to go walkabout.

Never was this more the case than in the second set.

Having lost the first, Watson proceeded to lose her opening two service games to fall 3-0 behind.

The change of ends that followed saw her sit for all of a minute with a towel over her head. The match, so it seemed, was over.

At which point Watson suddenly woke up and won five of the next six games.

Unfortunately the damage had already been done.

Although the British number two carved out and failed to take a set point in the 11th game, Flipkens kept her cool to break serve once again and ultimately take the match 6-4 7-5.
