A DEPLETED Raiders side paid the price for some costly mistakes on Saturday as they suffered a 70-26 defeat at Bury St Edmunds.

Despite a promising start, Guernsey haemorrhaged tries throughout the game to slip to their third straight defeat in National Two South.

The visitors scored inside the opening two minutes as Tom Ceillam went over from a catch-and-drive lineout, but the hosts quickly got into their stride and had scored five tries, two converted, by the time Charlie Currie touched down for the second Raiders score, which Alex Gow converted.

By half-time the deficit was 41-12 and although Guernsey briefly reduced the arrears thanks to a Nick Merrien try with Gow adding the extras, poor ball control and decision making from the visitors saw them ship more tries.

Ceillam grabbed his second try of the afternoon from another catch-and-drive move to give Guernsey the consolation of a four-try bonus point, with Tom Teasdale kicking the conversion, but the hosts had the final word with their 12th try of the afternoon.
