Rainbow Lad's small pot of gold

SERENA BROTHERTON steered Rainbow Lad home to a four and a half length victory in the feature event of the annual L’Ancresse races and with it a welcome £3,100 cheque from the richest start in CI racing.

The Betway Handicap over two miles – virtually two full laps – lived up to expectations as pre-meeting favourite Barwick pushed the Michael Appleby trained horse all the way.

In the four-horse field Berwick and Rainbow Lad were inseparable at the Swings second time around, but by the final bend Brotherton’s mount had inched away and never looked like being passed in the short final straight.

But the finish of the day was reserved for the six-furlong sprint for the Ross Gower Group Handicap.

Brockey Rise, the 1/2 favourite, made a hash of the first bend and having fallen a long way off the pace was pulled up in the finish straight where Doctor Parkes and It Must Be Faith reproduced their classic finish of 12 months ago.

It Must Be Faith won that race by a neck and so it was again, the photo finish providing the Brotherton-Appleby partnership with another win by a head on this occasion.

There was also a victory for the Trevor Gallienne-owned Herm while Amor Fati won the fifth and final race.
