Jory will be back from broken back
PETER JORY has escaped with a vertebral fracture and no lasting damage to his sporting ambitions after a first-stage crash in the Resolution IT Guernsey Rally.
The popular Commonwealth Games full-bore shooter and motorsport figure was co-driving John Eborall in a Peugeot 106 GTI when they crashed by the water tower at Les Mouilpieds.
While driver Eborall emerged ‘relatively unscathed’, according to Jory, the co-driver was sent to hospital.
Jory has since been discharged and intends to resume competing once safely possible.
‘I still have to be a bit careful with what I do for the start of the [shooting] season, I’m sure, but it’s very early days to assess the impact,’ he said ahead of the shooting season opening next month.
‘I am sure it will have some impact. Exactly how much impact will be decided by the specialist.’
Jory has spoken to two specialists and is due for another assessment next week.
He noted that it is difficult to predict the recovery time from a back injury of this nature and that he has not yet received a firm estimate.
‘[The specialists] said it will need some time to heal and rebuild, but the fracture is stable,’ he added.
‘I am not going to do anything to put my recovery in jeopardy.
‘I hopefully will be able to be competing again when the season is in full flow [from late May].’
After referring to the incident as ‘just one of those things’, a sanguine Jory thanked the emergency services, officials and hospital staff who tended to him.
‘Some of them do it voluntarily and some of them, it’s their job. Either way, they all helped out, and the hospital made my stay as comfortable as they could.’
