Brilliant Guernsey mark stadium anniversary with big win

It was party time at Victoria Park on Saturday as Guernsey’s home of football celebrated its first anniversary in style thanks to the rampant Green Lions.

Peacehaven & Telscombe arrived at the ground on an unbeaten run of 15 matches, with their last defeat coming narrowly at the hands of Guernsey FC in the reverse fixture in November, but Tony Vance’s men barely gave the visitors a sniff as they roared into a four-goal lead by half-time before adding a couple after the turnaround to complete an emphatic 6-0 victory, much to the delight of a crowd of 1,553.

‘I thought, first half the players were electric,’ said the GFC manager.

‘They were outstanding and every part of their game was good, in terms of we played the right areas, which is what we tried to focus on this week and what we wanted to try and, remind everybody.

‘And I thought we were brutal and ruthless, but also it was the off the ball stuff in terms of picking up our men and knowing our responsibilities and accountability.

‘That was really close to being a complete first half really and set the opportunity to go and win the game.’

Sam Murray set GFC on their way, scoring after only five minutes before Will Fazakerley added a first-half brace and the excellent Fin Du Port also got on the scoresheet before the interval.

In the second half, Charlton Gauvain marked his return from a two-match suspension with the fifth goal before Cal Le Lacheur put the icing on the cake with a lovely finish after a sublime pass from Matt Loaring.

‘They’re actually a good side and we didn’t allow them to be a good side. People will say, “oh they weren’t very good”, but ultimately that was because of us. Sometimes you’ve got to look at that and say, yeah, fair play, because they’re not unbeaten for so long for no reason,' Vance said.

‘As I said earlier in the week, when we played them away it was a proper game, and so we had to make sure that we were on it and then our quality came through.

'So that makes that performance even better, to be honest.’
