JERSEY showed their class as they retained the Kiya.ai T20I Inter-Insular Cup with a 3-0 series success in Guernsey over the weekend.

The Reds, who are 22nd in the ICC world T20 rankings compared to Guernsey at 38th, won both the first and third matches by a 37-run margin, with the second game a more comprehensive 60-run victory.

However, in a series that saw good contributions from Zak Damarell and Matt Stokes as well as others with the bat along with some decent performances from the likes of Will Peatfield and Ant Stokes, Guernsey captain Josh Butler had positives to take ahead of his side’s big trip to Finland in July for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 European Qualifier.

‘The weekend was a fair reflection of where the two teams are. Obviously, Jersey are 16 places higher than us in the ICC rankings, a really strong team playing with a lot of confidence. We’re not quite there yet.

‘But to play well [on Friday] and to bounce back this morning and a better game this afternoon was really pleasing.

‘There’s no better way to challenge yourself than playing a team that’s stronger than you. We know that Jersey are going to be stronger than any of the teams we face in Finland, so it’s a great challenge for us to test ourselves against the level up, which Jersey are.

‘We know if we field like that and play the way we played in Finland, we should go well.’

His opposite number Chuggy Perchard felt that Guernsey played ‘some good cricket in patches’.

‘They’ve got quality, there’s a lot of quality in that squad and fingers crossed from a Jersey perspective that they go really well in Finland because we want to be back competing with them on the ICC schedule again because it’s always a tasty affair – we love the rivalry.’
