Aitchison takes title by a five-shot margin
DI AITCHISON has been crowned the senior women’s Island champion after an impressive five-shot victory this week.
After sharing the halfway lead with Kay Mapley on 80 following Monday’s opening round at L’Ancresse, Aitchison pulled away from the field on Wednesday with a 76 gross.
The highlight of the winner’s second round was a birdie three at the eighth as she went out in 39 before dropping just a single shot on the back nine for a 36-hole aggregate of 156 gross.
Veronica Bougourd finished in second place as she followed her opening 84 with a 77 that comprised 14 pars, three bogeys and a double.
Kay Mapley came third a further four shots back having returned rounds of 80 and 85.
First prize off handicap went to Kathryn Touzeau, who finished on an excellent 12-under par nett aggregate of 132 to win by eight from Nicole Wild with Sylvia Sirett third on 141.
Touzeau, playing off 21, followed up her opening 68 with an outstanding 64 on Wednesday that included a birdie two at the third.
In the Senior Men’s Island Championship, defending champion Bobby Eggo progressed to the match-play stages as the top seed having finished first in the 36-hole strokeplay phase.
He finished four-under par having followed his opening 67 with a 69 on Wednesday.
Nigel Vaudin finished second 10 shots back after rounds of 74 and 72, while last year’s runner-up Andrew Boyd was third as one of three players to finish on 149.
Rob Teed, who finished top of the leaderboard off handicap, claimed the fourth and final spot in the semi-finals from Dave Nicolle on countback.
Eggo will face Teed in the first semi-final tomorrow, teeing off at 9.30am, with Vaudin taking on Boyd in the second knock-out clash.
The men’s final will tee off on Sunday at 8am.
