Guernsey fight back to retain Women’s Muratti

Calleigh Hedley scored twice as Guernsey’s women came from behind to beat Jersey 2-1 in the first senior Muratti played at Victoria Park.

The visitors took the lead early on through a Samantha Silva tap-in, while Guernsey goalkeeper Emma Queripel kept the hosts in the game with a crucial penalty save on the half-hour mark.

But Guernsey, having created plenty of chances without finding a way through in the first-half, turned the game around in a matter of a few second-half minutes.

Calleigh Hedley slotting through the Jersey goalkeeper’s legs to level things up with Guernsey’s first ever senior Muratti goal at the new home of island football.

And Hedley, who was deservedly named player of the match, scored the winner soon after, showing plenty of composure to put Guernsey ahead in front of a crowd of more than 950.

It means Anna Gauvain’s side retain the trophy they won so brilliantly at Springfield a year ago, the first time the Greens have won back-to-back Women’s Murattis since 2001.

Guernsey’s men also triumphed at Victoria Park on Saturday, winning 3-1 to get their hands back on the Vase for the first time since 2017 and end Jersey’s run of five straight successes.
