That is the view of Guernsey FC manager Tony Vance, whose side are seventh in the Southern Combination Premier Division, one point off the top five with at least a game in hand on all sides above them, going into the second of three successive home games today against Lancing.
GFC’s current run of five successive victories began with their remarkable come-from-behind 3-2 victory away to Lancing at the end of September, inspired by substitute Corey Brouard who scored the first then assisted the other two goals for Jacques Cauvin and Archie Drillot, but Vance admitted that ‘we are winning games, just about’ and emphasised that improvement is needed if they want to maintain their streak against visitors who are unbeaten in the league since that defeat.
‘I do know Lancing are a good side. We only played them recently and that was one we won in the 93rd minute when we had been losing 2-0 with 10 minutes to go and they were causing us some problems up front.
‘They will not be taken lightly, that’s for sure.
‘They are on a decent run of form, but from what I saw when we played them, that does not surprise me.
‘We have to be better than we were last week in terms of management of the game, and we have got to be more clinical. If we get that right, then I think we can beat most to the teams in this league at home.
‘A good thing is we are churning out results, but we do not make it easy for ourselves and Lancing are a team that can easily get something from us if we keep doing that.’
The Green Lions will be forced into a change at the back with Jacob Fallaize serving a suspension for the red card he picked up last week for a professional foul in the hard-fought 2-1 success over Bexhill United.
Vance revealed that he had no sympathy for his big centre-back, calling the incident ‘silly’.
‘He lost his focus and for a moment he thought he was Beckenbauer. The week before he took a free-kick and thought he was Del Piero. To be honest, I just want him to stick to being Jacob Fallaize,’ said the manager, before expanding on what he might do to counteract the loss of the defender.
‘We might change shape, we have got options.
‘The reality is, and this is what we have been working on as coaches for the last 18 months, when we have got a full group available, nobody has a right to play. Ultimately that gives us the option to challenge them and be creative.’
‘On his day, Jacob is very good, but you only have to remember that last year a young Gil Hunter came in, did really well and ended up winning a Muratti, so there’s always a bum for a seat – if we have got a full quota available.’
Guernsey FC against Lancing kicks off at 1.30pm today at Victoria Park.
