The Green Lions have seven games pencilled in for the month and could have more depending on progress in the FA Cup, making it a big change from the recent norm when GFC were not entering national knockouts.
‘Normally we get one and then a month off to start the season, so I don’t know if I’m disappointed or pleased to have that many games – and that seven could be nine,’ said GFC manager Tony Vance with a chuckle.
He certainly seemed happy that his side’s first season back at Step 5 level will start and end at home, with their league campaign kicking off on Saturday 9 August when Wick will be the visitors to Victoria Park while the last game of the season will be here against Lancing on 25 April.
‘We have double home games to begin, with the FA Cup tie against Bedfont Sports being here [on Saturday 2 August], so that’s a good start,’ Vance said.
The first two away games in the league are both midweek fixtures as the Green Lions will travel to Seaford Town on Tuesday 12 August and then to AFC Varndeanians six days later before they head to Bexhill United in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase.
Other notable dates include the traditional festive fixtures. Saturday 27 December sees GFC head to the Vistavis Community Stadium to take on Forest Row, while their first fixture of 2026 will be the visit of AFC Varndeanians to Victoria Park on Saturday 3 January.
‘We are going into the unknown this season, but it is exciting,’ said Vance.
‘Some of the grounds we will go to might not be as good as we’ve had in the last eight or nine years at Step 4, but the standard will not be quite as good either.
‘All we can focus on is ourselves and what we are aiming to do is look to play a more expansive game of football. We started doing it towards the end of last season and we want to push on.’
Meanwhile, the new GFC Development team made it two wins from two in the Spirit Cup on Wednesday night as they beat Vale Rec 6-1 at Victoria Park.
Goals from Jamie Dodd and Owen Tardif gave them a two-goal first-half lead before Vale Rec pulled one back just before the break through Bertie Beddow.
After the interval, Will Fazakerley scored twice in quick succession for Leon Meakin’s side before Aston Young calmly slotted home the fifth and Cal Le Lacheur completed the scoring with quarter-of-an-hour remaining.
Also in Group A this week, Northerners beat Bels 4-0 thanks to two goals in either half.
Mason Prigent gave them the lead before Archie Drillot headed in the second.
Ben Bullock’s deflected shot made it three early in the second half before Jamie Smith added the fourth late on.
The Spirit Cup continues this evening as St Martin’s face Rovers in Group B. Kick off is at 7pm. Sylvans take on Rangers on Sunday at 1.30pm.
