‘Something special building’ as Raiders clock up fifth win

Guernsey Raiders have climbed to fifth in National Two East after producing another impressive display to beat Westcombe Park 38-22 at Footes Lane.

Raiders ran in six tries, including four in a devastating first-half showing, to set themselves up for a fifth consecutive victory as they head into a well-earned rest week.

‘Couldn’t be happier,’ said captain Dom Rice at full-time, after leading his side to a win which sees them leapfrog their opponents in the standings.

‘We needed the five points today. They were above us in the league so that’s a huge win for us.

‘We’ve always known we’ve got something special building here, first three games this season didn’t go our way but we stuck at it as a group.

‘We don’t want to rest there either, there’s a lot more to come from this group.’

After the visitors had levelled up John Dawe’s opening try, Guernsey turned on the style to build a commanding first-half lead.

Ant Armstrong, Charlie Simmonds and Ciaran McGann crossed in quick succession as Raiders matched the level they had found to blow Esher away in their last home outing.

Westcombe fought back though, scoring two quickfire tries of their own to get themselves back in the game at the break.

But Raiders prevailed after a scrappy second-half, scrum-half Dale Rutledge darting through a gap to finish from close range before McGann broke through the Park line at the death to cap another victory for Jordan Reynolds’ side.

‘Really good first half for us, but it became really frustrating in the second half,’ said Reynolds.

‘We were on the wrong side of a lot of penalties, but it was lucky that we had the courage to hold on as well as we did and score at the end there.’

But a month or so on from shipping 87 points in a chastening defeat at Old Albanian, Guernsey’s director of rugby is proud of the progress his side have made.

‘If you look at where we were five weeks ago, it was a very sobering time for us as a squad.

‘Especially in our team meetings, coming off the back of that 87, we wanted to turn that around, we wanted attitude to be the catalyst.

‘I think we’ve made some great strides on that, which is great. And I don’t think we’re at our best at the moment, there’s so much more this group can grow on.

Raiders’ next game is against Havant in two weeks’ time.
