Green Lionesses salvage a point in fourth draw

Guernsey FC Women remain unbeaten in their first league season, but now have more draws than wins this season.

The Green Lionesses came back from 2-0 down to take a point from their away game against Bursledon – their fourth draw of the season. GFC have won three of their seven games played.

‘We came away with a point, and we are still unbeaten – if someone had told me in the summer before we entered this league that we would still be unbeaten I would have been shocked,’ said manager Anna Gauvain.

‘At half-time we were still in the game, and confident so I think we were disappointed as we could have gone onto win the game.

‘It’s all a learning curve for us.’

After two early goals for the hosts, Calleigh Hedley added another goal to her impressive record of 40 goals in 21 games and midfielder Jess Frampton scored her first goal for the club, as her own free kick fell back to her and she fired into the back of the net from distance.

‘The girls weren’t quite at it to start with yesterday, we had to adjust to how they were playing and going 2-0 down early on wasn’t great,’ said Gauvain.

‘They had figured Calleigh out a bit and we had to make some changes, but we finished strongly again.

‘Jess Frampton was really strong for us. She scored a great goal to get us level and her experience playing in this league and her physicality really helps the girls perform. She is a leader in the squad.’

Going into the game Guernsey, who remain second in the league, would have been the favourites, with Bursledon sitting ninth, but Gauvain said the league table is deceiving.

‘They have some really strong players in there that caused us some problems throughout the game,’ she said.

Next up the Green Lionesses are in for their tough challenge yet as they face Farnham Town at Victoria Park on Sunday 9 November.

Farnham are just a single point behind GFC in the league with three games in hand, having won all of their games so far this season.

‘The girls are well up for it, they’ve been talking about this team since we entered the league,’ said Gauvain.

‘It’s a good opportunity to challenge ourselves and test where we are.’
