At Friday night’s resoundingly successful dinner boxing show against North of England select, which drew a bumper audience of well beyond 200, Adams marked his return to the ring after more than four years out with a unanimous-decision victory against Hakeem Niwaz.

This winning return at St Pierre Park is just the start of a busy competition programme for Adams, who may also be making a shot at this year’s National Amateur Championships in the elites.

‘I’m looking forward to this year, to see what I can achieve,’ he said.

‘I just want to see how much I can actually go for.

‘Any competition I can get into, I’ll be doing this year.

‘I stopped to focus on work and make money, because boxing takes a lot of time – training two hours a day while eating the minimum amount, and working 10 hours a day in construction, is not ideal.’

He will be building up experience with multiple fights at the Guerilla Round Robin in Swansea, from 20-22 February.

Adams is also feeling happier and heavier. He is now fighting at 65kg, a 5kg increase on his previous weight.

The resurgent boxer felt ‘really good’ throughout the 3x3min. contest against a formidable opponent.

‘I feel really fresh and I’ve worked really hard for this fight,’ he said.

‘Coming back and doing the 3x3s with no warm-up, I felt strong, stronger than I’ve ever felt before.

‘I used to weight cut a bit too much when I was younger.

‘It’s good to be back and it stops me going out drinking and all that – saves money.’

Adams’ triumphant return was just one of the success stories at a show which ended in a 5-4 victory for Guernsey, with Tyler Quintal’s own unanimous win against Yuui Heya ultimately winning bout of the night.

Guernsey Amalgamated Boxing Club head coach Ben Duff was also pleased to see such a large audience.

‘It’s biggest one I’ve had, definitely, since after Covid,’ he said.

‘We’ve just struggled a little bit after Covid to bring the numbers back up.

‘Tonight is very positive and having numbers like this will keep the sport alive.

‘It will make it viable to put these shows on.’
