Dodd and Chivers live up to their billing to reach CI singles finals

Garry Dodd and Kay Chivers were the big winners from Island Championships finals night on Wednesday and will meet their visiting Caesarean counterparts at the GTTA centre in Guernsey on Friday evening.

Dodd was in fine form during his clash with Lawrence Stacey in the showpiece Men’s Singles event, with the left-hander emerging as a 14-time champion for the loss of just 23 points.

In a repeat of the final from 12 months prior, Stacey played some good table tennis during the encounter, but Dodd was in ruthless form and made it difficult for his opponent to obtain any foothold in the match.

The success is significant in that it ties Dodd as joint second of all time alongside Mark Pipet on 14 Men’s Singles Island titles.

He also joined forces with Alex Robinson to overcome the Stacey twins, Lawrence and Josh, to win the men's doubles title, but Dodd missed out in the mixed doubles final alongside Juliette Yeaman as Robinson joined forces with Marli Barker to claim victory.

Chivers was in prime form in an evening where she won all 4 of the finals she contested.

The highlight of these was her victory in the women’s singles final against junior Keira Eldridge, who has enjoyed a fine conclusion to the league season and Island Championships.

Eldridge competed well and despite going down 4-0, will rue chances in the fourth set, as a 10-7 lead did not materialise, with Chivers fighting back to win it 12-10 and her 19th title in the process.

She won the women's doubles in partnership with Barker and also claimed the women's veterans singles title and the O60 open singles.

The stage is now set for an exciting evening of CI Finals.

Dodd heads into a clash with Leon Pierre already joint second in the list of CI Men’s Singles winners with Frank Bougeard. A victory over Pierre would see him move outright 2nd onto 11 titles and just 2 shy of the 13 held by Bert Brenton.

Chivers on the other hand will meet junior Freya Allaway in the Women’s Singles final.

Action is due to get underway at 6.30pm at the GTTA centre at Hougue Du Pommier, with attendance free to any spectators wishing to watch the action. Alternatively, the matches are expected to be streamed live on the GTTA’s Youtube channel - @TheGTTA for those unable to attend in person.
