The Green Lions said they had been informed by the Southern Combination Football League late on Monday that it had made the decision to reverse the venue for the clash with Peacehaven, citing ‘complex travel arrangements as justification’.
GFC had been looking forward to hosting the match at Victoria Park this Sunday, having earned the right to play at home as the higher-ranked side following their semi-final win over Horsham last weekend.
The club said it had contested the ruling, but were told today by the league that ‘the fixture will have to be switched to the mainland and played on either Tuesday 12 or Wednesday 13 May’.
Not only would that see the Green Lions stripped of one of the biggest occasions in the club’s history, but it could leave as few as three days for the island representative squad to prepare for the Muratti Vase final - which the bulk of GFC’s players would expect to be involved in.
Peacehaven, meanwhile, said the travel options explored by Guernsey had ‘involved multiple flights and different airport locations making the arrangements unfeasible’. They said a venue for the league’s proposed dates was yet to be confirmed.
Guernsey FC said they were considering their options and were reserving the right to pursue a formal appeal to the Football Association.
