It was opened at a packed Candie Museum on Friday evening.

It details the complete history of Guernsey’s dairy industry, from the home industry, to the founding of two dairies, to the single States dairy, which was built at the Hangman’s crossroads in 1951 – the site it still inhabits today.

Assistant curator Sophie Brehaut said they had been working for two years to bring the exhibition together.

‘We have been lent lots of objects by Guernsey Dairy and Nic Jee,’ she said.

She also thanked Guernsey Dairy managing director Andrew Tabel.

‘He saved a lot of things from the dairy and kept them all this time, as one day they could be used for something.

‘He has been fantastic.’

Paul Chambers and Olly Tracey helped gather photographs and video of local dairies and Miss Brehaut said that had been the highlight for her.

‘We got to see a robotic milker,’ she said.

‘There are two farms that have it here.’

Among the people looking around was 73-year-old Tom Mantle, a retired dairy farmer from near Toronto, Canada. Guernsey cows used to be among his herd.

‘It’s been interesting,’ he said.

He added that one of the highlights of his trip to Guernsey had been enjoying red, full fat Guernsey milk, which was not easily available back home.

Miss Brehaut said it was hoped the display would appeal to islanders and visitors.

‘I think it is going to be quite popular,’ she said.

The exhibition was designed and built by the in-house museum team.

It will continue until mid-September.
