‘Oompa loompa doompadee-do’ can be heard from the windows most Sunday afternoons.

Crammed full of all the songs you’d expect to hear – Pure Imagination, CandyMan, and of course the iconic Oompa Loompa song among others – the cast of 35 (19 of them under 18) is bursting with energy and excitement as opening night grows close.

‘I could not be more proud of the cast which is bringing these well-known characters to life,’ said director Lisa Johnston.

‘But also to the army of people behind the scenes making the magic happen. Our crew has been working in a warehouse since October last year, creating the iconic Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. To say this show is challenging is an understatement – vanishing children on TV, chocolate rivers and inventing machines that produce never-before-heard-of confectionery are just some of the hurdles Simon Rowe and his amazing team have faced.’

Dany Adams has created the costume plot for the show.

‘Absolutely bonkers,’ is how she described it, adding: ‘It’s been the most challenging show I’ve been involved in over the last 30 years. I’ve tried to keep true to what the audience will be expecting, but also create costumes that are quirky and fun.’

Taking on the role of Charlie Bucket is 13-year-old Florence Sparkes.

‘It’s been so much fun in the rehearsal room, we’ve laughed a lot and everyone has been so kind and helpful. I’ve really enjoyed being involved.’

The Avril Earl Centre is responsible for the choreography, including bringing the crazy Oompa Loompas to life onstage.

‘It’s been a lot of fun working with this fantastic cast, they have really put their all into everything we’ve thrown at them,’ said Avril.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory from Gadoc is at the Beau Sejour Theatre from Saturday 19 to Saturday 26 April, with matinees on the 19, 21 and 26.
