John and Sally Surcombe's back gate leads onto property belonging to Kings Premier Health Club.
'Our daughter recently broke her leg, so Sally got in touch with Kings to ask if we could use this route to get her in and out in her wheelchair and avoid the flight of steps at the front of our house. She is only four, so is still carryable, but very tall for her age,' said Mr Surcombe.
'This route has been habitually used by occupants and visitors to our house for at least 10 years, and you can see the gateway which has been there for at least 50 years, but there is no formal right of access.'
Mr Surcombe said that soon after his wife contacted Kings, metal fencing, wooden planks and a large trailer were placed directly in front of the gate, blocking them from temporarily using the route for their daughter's wheelchair.
'Ten minutes later the manager of Kings replied to say that we couldn't use this route to get our daughter in and out because of the health and safety risk associated with having people accessing this area.'
Director of Kings Premier Health Club Steve Brehaut said 'nothing has been placed on their driveway or property'.
