It comes on the backdrop of the rising costs of agency nurses in Guernsey, which nearly tripled last year to £4.5m. and the shortage of nursing staff being felt across the world as demographic changes put increase demand on services.

Deputy Luxon, who is not standing for re-election, said before he leaves the political arena and the department, he really wanted to encourage all secondary school children and students already at university, to look at the fantastic and broad opportunities that were available in the medical field locally.
