It is the first school, and the largest team, ever to take on the challenge, and will see 48 nine- and 10-year-olds running along with their teachers, Paul James and Karen Lane.

They will aim to run 30 minutes a day for 30 days, and while the official challenge starts on Saturday, the pupils have started early to account for the days they will miss in the half-term holiday.

Mr James said he really enjoys running and was keen to take part himself, and getting the children involved fitted in with the school's commitment to being healthier.

'This week, it's our school's healthy week where we are highlighting the benefits of eating healthily and being more active. Our PSHE curriculum is very focused on leading a healthy lifestyle and so this ties in really well,' he said.

The participants will go for a run around the school fields each day, and will also have the opportunity to join Mr James for the park-run on Saturday mornings.

People can still sign up for the event, which is aiming to reach a record number of participants, at www.lesbourgshospice.org.gg or by calling 201329.
