The role was created in 2009, and was previously held by Deputy Jane Stephens, Deputy John Gollop, and most recently, Arrun Wilkie.

The disability champion is the political voice for disabled islanders and carers within the Assembly, and whoever fulfils the role is tasked with looking at proposals and scrutinising them from a disability perspective.

They also help them deal with and resolve issues with the States services that relate to disability.

Deputy Hansmann Rouxel said that as she grew up during apartheid in South Africa, she knows the damage societies which fail to respect everyone's rights can cause.

'I firmly believe that islanders with disabilities can and should be fully included in every aspect of Guernsey life and I want to ensure that family members get the support they deserve too,' she said.

Anyone needing help to resolve a disability issue with a States committee or service can call Deputy Hansmann Rouxel on 07911 765863 or email Sarah.HansmannRouxel@deputies.org.gg.
