ROYAL Navy bomb disposal experts destroyed a Second World War German device found in Portsmouth Harbour.

The 500lb bomb was towed out to open waters 1.5 miles east of the Isle of Wight where a controlled explosion took place.

The device was found at 5am. The Commodore Clipper, carrying 94 passengers, was due to dock in Portsmouth at 6.30am.

But a 500-metre cordon was placed around the unexploded German bomb, resulting in a five hour delay.

Combined with the weather and tidal constraints, Condor Ferries decided to cancel the Clipper's remaining services that day.

However, sailings were back to normal yesterday and the Clipper left Portsmouth for the Channel Islands as scheduled at 9am.
