Beachcomber Janet spreads the word

A KEEN beachcomber has set up a blog in the hope of inspiring others to help tidy up Guernsey’s shores.

Trust worker Janet Unitt has always picked up the odd bit of rubbish on the beach, but since joining the Found on the Beach in Guernsey Facebook page, she has become more focussed.

‘I was really inspired by it and it made me want to do more,’ she said.

She began finding all sorts of weird and unusual things and posting them on her own feed. But at the start of this year she set up the Janet’s Beachcombing Finds Facebook blog so she could share what she discovered with more people.

‘I wanted to show people what I find and reach people,’ she said.

She takes two bags with her to the beach - one for rubbish and one for recyclables like cans and plastic bottles.

The most common find is scraps of green fishing rope.

‘A lot of the fishing debris is accidental,’ she said.

‘Today I found a crab pot and the fisherman will have been gutted to lose it.’

However there is also rubbish that has either been left on the beach or is washed up after being thrown off cargo or cruise ships.

La Societe Guernesiaise is holding a big beach clean at Grandes Rocques at 11am on Saturday. Bags, gloves, and litter pickers will be provided.
