Released on Friday, the Studio Canal film based on the book of the same name took £825,777 in 499 cinemas in its first weekend.
The Guardian compared its takings with last year’s Their Finest.
‘Which like Guernsey has an intrepid female protagonist, was adapted from a best-selling novel and had a Second World War setting. Their Finest debuted exactly a year ago with a very similar £826,000 from 458 cinemas, and £850,000 including previews, on its way to a £4.05m. total,’ it said.
Top of the box office ratings for the weekend of 22 April was Rampage, a fantasy science-fiction film starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, which took £1,413,973 from 566 sites in its second week.
In second place is the thriller A Quiet Place, which has a high approval rating of 95% online. It took £1,024,722 over the weekend.
There are new independent films on the list such as Funny Cow, starring Maxine Peake, which took less than £80,000 gross over the weekend.
In total, there are 107 films on the list being shown throughout the UK with 15 more opening next week.
In Guernsey, where takings do not contribute to the UK box office charts and tickets can only be booked a week in advance, the film has performed strongly.
‘We have been selling tickets non-stop for the Guernsey movie, 90% have been sold out for this week. Every 4pm and 6.45pm has sold out almost instantly,’ said Lee Smith, assistant manager at The Mallard.
‘We have the film booked with us until 17 May at the moment, but hope it’s here longer due to the high demand. Some have already been to see it more than once.
‘We have also done about 10 private hires for this movie and we are just over half-way there now.
‘We don’t have an exact financial figure at the moment as all our private corporate hires and general admissions are still being reconciled. However, the first week and rate of sales have come close to surpassing those of the last Star Wars film.’
