Lt-Governor Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder has announced that the Queen has approved the appointment of advocate Jessica Roland as the new Deputy Bailiff.

This means she is likely to become the island's first female Bailiff in the future.

The Queen's approval comes on the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor.

Ms Roland is currently a managing partner of Mourant in Guernsey and she will succeed Richard McMahon, who will become Bailiff of Guernsey next May.

Ms Roland began her career as a solicitor in England in 1997 before returning to Guernsey and becoming an advocate in 1999. She was appointed notary public in 2006 and accredited as a mediator by the Centre for Dispute Resolution.

The office of Deputy Bailiff was created in 1969 and tasks include continuing the court's judicial work and discharging the Bailiff's parliamentary duties when the island is without a bailiff.

The retirement age for the Bailiff was reduced to 65 in 1999.
